Internationally renowned Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen has created an interesting, novel and versatile storage chest, entitled Kirstu, for Marimekko’s spring 2007 interior decoration collection. The chest consists of a base and a tray that functions as a lid.
The starting point for the design of Kirstu was the observation that there are plenty of things at home, for which it is difficult to find beautiful storage. Kirstu is an attractive solution for a variety of storing needs of a home and at the same time a modern piece of furniture.
Magazines, clothes and toys can be stored easily and neatly in Kirstu, and it also makes a snug home for pets. Kirstu is an impressive decorative accent in any room at home. It also functions brilliantly as a coffee table, and the lid can be used separately as a tray.
Kirstu comes in two practical sizes: 26.5cm x 46cm and 26.5cm x 65cm. The textile-like base is made of rigid polyester felt. It holds weight well, but is nevertheless not meant for sitting on. Ecological factors have been taken into account in the production process of the felt; thanks to extensive recycling, the production generates nearly no waste at all. The tray/lid features Ilkka Suppanen's Marhaba pattern – a fresh, rhythmic design which also appears in Marimekko's new fabric collection.
Kirstu is an excellent addition to Marimekko’s wide range of interior decoration products. The chests will be available in shops from March 2007.
