Marimekko x Spinnova

From pulp to pretty dresses

Cotton is a natural material. But unfortunately the global cotton trade also demands enormous quantities of water every single year. An innovative collaboration between Marimekko and Finnish fiber tech company, Spinnova just might lead to a more sustainable future for the textile industry.

99% less water

99% less water

The collaboration between Marimekko and Spinnova kicked off in 2017, when the two companies set out to uncover the exciting potential of wood-based materials. With the help of Spinnova’s innovative technology, it’s possible to producetextile fiber that uses about 99% less water than conventional cotton production. Additionally, the fiber contains zero harmful chemicals and is 100% recyclable.
Inhouse innovation
Spinnova’s experts and Marimekko’s designers worked side by side at the Marimekko printing factory on testing and developing prototypes that would work at a commercial scale. And in February 2020, the first-ever clothes using Spinnova’s technology were presented to the world.
