The wardrobe guide: Marimekko archetype silhouettes tried and tested by Stephanie Broek

To make the getting dressed game feel like a breeze, we proudly introduce the new Marimekko archetype silhouettes, featured in our dresses, skirts, and blouses. We invited fashion muse Stephanie Broek to style our archetypes in her way and to pick a favorite.

Recognizing the different silhouettes that best compliment your figure and personality is a quintessential part of building a signature style. The three new archetypes are modernized versions of the iconic Marimekko dress shapes we’ve been presenting through the decades – the reason our empowering, beautifully airy pieces have become so loved around the world. We asked fashion editor and creative consultant Stephanie Broek to choose the silhouette that best works for her.

To refine a signature style, define your archetype
The best news is that the new Marimekko archetype silhouettes don’t have an expiration date and are therefore a great way to build a sustainable signature style. But how to get started in refining your wardrobe? Narrating your style and preferences in words is a great way to define the archetype you’re most comfortable with and for Stephanie Broek it is all about the sense of effortlessness. “A mix of masculine and feminine elements, minimal but never boring,” Stephanie describes her style before revealing that she has fallen for the Marimekko straight silhouette. “After trying all three Marimekko archetypes, I realized that all of them are versatile and suitable for any body type, but the straight silhouette is very chic and to me it feels the most like me. When you feel comfortable, it shows.”

Get creative

After you’ve found your favorite archetype, you can start playing with different lengths and fits within the archetype silhouette and dress them up or down. “I am always looking for a contrast or an edge. Fashion enhances my personality and different sides of me, which I love, but before buying a garment, I always ask myself: Will I still wear and love this in five years? If the answer is no, I don’t buy it. I treat my wardrobe as a showroom full of perfected pieces that fit my body like a glove and are timeless and versatile. When the foundation is in order, I do occasionally love to dress up and go all out,” Stephanie reveals.

Sustainable wardrobe = the perfect capsule
Stephanie is a master of timeless style and for her the perfect capsule wardrobe is small, well-ordered and consists of long-lasting, versatile pieces that can be worn interchangeably. “I avoid impulse purchases and have trained myself to only make mindful investments. It’s also important to look critically at your consumer behavior.” Stephanie encourages everyone to ask themselves: “What is missing in my wardrobe? We tend to collect certain pieces, like black blazers or jeans. Start saving for that piece and wait until you have found the perfect one.”
