  • FAQ

    Is online shopping safe?
We treat your customer information as confidential and will not pass it on to third parties. We use a secure SSL connection to protect the connection between the online store and your computer. We safeguard the security of our online store by continuously developing and testing it.

    Can I cancel my order?
Once you have placed your order, it automatically proceeds to collection and delivery and can no longer be canceled. If you wish, you may return ordered items within 30 days. See details at Exhanges and Returns.

Can I combine two orders that I have placed?
We process each order individually and cannot combine them later.

Can I order online and pay by invoice?
Our online store does have the option to pay by invoice in Finland, Sweden, Germany and UK.

Is it possible for an order to be canceled after I have received an order confirmation?
We aim to deliver all orders as confirmed but there is a very minor possibility of stocks running out if several orders are placed at the same time. This situation is highly unusual. If this happens, our customer service will contact the customer.

The product I added to my cart had expired by the time I proceeded to checkout. How can this happen?
The item is reserved for you only upon payment. Sometimes another customer may purchase the last item and proceed to checkout before you have done so.

How can I return goods I have ordered?
    See Exhanges and Returns.

Does the return policy apply to all products?
The right to return applies to items that are unused and intact, with all product labels and tags in place. The product must be in its original package. Cut-to-length fabric is a made-to-order product, so customers are not entitled to return it. There is also no return right for swimwear and underwear.

I would like to exchange the product I bought for another one – what should I do?
If you wish to exchange the product using the online store, you will have to return the original product as instructed and place a new order online.

Can I leave a package unclaimed if I wish to refuse it?
To speed up the return and refund process, we would prefer it if you took delivery of the products and then fill a cancellation note online.

The product I received is faulty or I noticed a defect when I used it. What should I do?
We apologize for the faulty product. In the event of a product defect, you can either contact a Marimekko store or send the product back to the online store. Make a note on the cancellation form that the return is due to a defect. If we can verify the product defect, we will refund the price. Please read more under Complaints.

I wish to change the delivery address for the order. What should I do?
You will receive either e-mail or text message with DHL tracking code and estimated delivery time soon after the package has left our warehouse. By clicking the link in the message you can choose best possible delivery option for you or you can change the delivery address within the same country.

Can I order products for a company, for example as business gifts?
You can order products for a company, for example by using the company's credit card as the means of payment. If you would prefer to place an order and receive an invoice, please contact our sales.

    How long does delivery take?
Delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. During campaigns and sales, delivery times may be longer.

Can products be ordered as gifts?
Yes, you can select a separate shipping address.

How will the recipient be informed of the delivery?
The recipient will be informed by the shipping provider. However, it is a good idea to inform the recipient of the upcoming delivery so they know to expect it.

Do I have to register to place orders online?
No. You may shop online without registering as a customer or signing in. Please note, however, that some of our benefits are only available to registered users.

I have registered as a Marimekko Village member. How can I update my contact details?
Once you have signed in on our website, you can change your password and update your contact details when logged in. In some countries, when you move, we will receive your new address automatically from the population register, unless you have chosen to prevent companies from accessing your details.

    How do campaign codes work?
We offer code-based discounts from time to time. To activate the discount, enter the code into the designated field before finalizing the payment.

What is the width of Marimekko fabrics?
The fabrics are 145 to 150 cm wide.

What are fabrics sold by the repeat?
Some of our fabrics are sold by the repeat rather than by the meter. This means that the unit of measurement is the length of one entire repeated pattern. Read more under Buying Marimekko fabrics. Check the product page of the individual fabric to see whether it is sold by the meter or by the repeat.

  • Buying Marimekko fabrics

    Ordering fabrics online

You can order fabrics from our online store just like any other products. Choose the fabric you like, its colour and length in metres or number of repeats, and add it to your cart. Your cart will show you the final price and quantity of the fabric.

Check the product page of the fabric to see whether it is sold by the metre or by the repeat. Fabrics with large patterns are generally sold by the repeat, and those with small patterns are sold by the metre.

The amount of fabric you order will arrive in one continuous length. Coated fabrics are delivered rolled around a cardboard tube, ensuring that the fabric stays neat during transport. In the order packing process, coated fabric rolls are handled as individual parcels.

Please note that fabrics are made-to-order products, which makes them non-returnable.

    About our fabrics

Our fabrics are 145 to 150 cm wide. The length of pattern repeat is mentioned in the specifications of the fabric. Repeats are within +/– 3% of what is specified.

The tone of our fabrics may vary between different printing batches. There may be slight differences in the colour tone of the picture on the product page and the actual fabric.

Marimekko fabrics are printed using either a flatbed or rotary printing method. Printing large-print fabrics using the flatbed method leaves a repeat line at the edge of the pattern, and the prominence of this line depends on the fabric’s colour and pattern. The repeat line is not a flaw but a feature of the printing technique that can also be used as an effect.

The majority of fabrics printed at the Marimekko printing facility in Herttoniemi have been granted the Öko-Tex Standard 100 certificate, which guarantees that the fabrics are free of toxins. Since 2008, our coated cottons have been coated with phthalate-free PVC.

How much fabric do you need?

It is a good idea to plan your sewing carefully prior to ordering a fabric to make sure that you purchase the correct amount. When calculating the amount of fabric needed, be sure to take into account the excess required for hems and aligning the print.

For aligning the pattern, use the repeat measurement (found in the specifications) as a guide. Please also take potential shrinking into account when planning your sewing (cotton, sateen, and batiste: 4%; linen: 6%).

  • Care instructions for products and information on materials

When it comes to being ecologically friendly, the durability of a product is key. Our goal at Marimekko is to make our products last, with the proper care, from generation to generation. Our products are marked with the Clevercare label, which supports the proper care of products. On the Clevercare.info website you can find care instructions that are good for the environment and your product and that will save you time and money. The instructions note, for example, that products should not be washed too often or in too high temperatures. This will not only be beneficial to the environment, but it will also allow your product to stay beautiful for longer.

In order to maintain your products’ good looks for as long as possible, we recommend washing and taking care of them according to the care instructions. There are also some general care instructions, which should be followed. Sometimes, instead of washing a product, a simple airing can do the trick. Textiles should be washed only if they are dirty because unnecessary washing only burdens the environment and the product. If you are dealing with a tough stain, please turn to a professional. Most stain removers also include whiteners, which can damage the colors of a product.

Sort your laundry according to color, light and dark colors separately. Products with strong colors may bleed color especially in the first wash and they should be washed separately. Washing small and large textiles in the same wash can enhance the washing outcome since this will prevent the washing machine from becoming too full. The washing machine is full when you can insert a fist on top of the laundry without pushing the laundry down. When washing wet laundry, leave more space in the machine. Close all zippers and buttons and turn the garments inside out. This will also lessen pilling (the formation of small fuzz on the surface of the garment). The maximum washing temperature is always selected according to the care instructions, not according to the fiber content. The best washing result is often achieved by using a moderate amount of the detergent that is suitable for the material: using too much detergent will not guarantee a clean washing outcome. Fabric softeners should also be dosed with caution or refrained from completely depending on the material. We always recommend using a detergent that is meant for colored textiles and to wash colored textiles separately from other laundry in the beginning. Products should be removed promptly after the washing cycle has finished and set to dry airily so that they remain fresh. This will also help with averting discolorations and residue streaks that may appear on clothing after washing. Laundry should not be dried in direct sunlight to avoid fading.

The care instructions’ given washing temperature is the highest temperature in which the garment should be washed. When the care instructions state, “follow the recommended washing temperature”, this means that the product doesn’t stand a lower washing temperature. The product may bleed color when wet if the care instructions say, “wash separately” or “wash with like colors”. Washing separately is also recommended for products that tend to form fuzz (pilling). Usually the bleeding of colors and pilling both decrease with every wash. Washing clothes in extra water will help to maintain an even color and get rid of any possible color that has bled into the rinsing water.

    Washing by hand

Products that have a “wash by hand” label require extra delicate care. When it comes to wool clothing, for example, the highest tolerable washing temperature is 30 degrees Celsius. When washing by hand, first fill a shallow container with lukewarm water, then dip the product in the water and remove it. Then add the suitable detergent (wool, silk) and mix it carefully into the water. After this, place the product into the container and carefully squeeze and press it underwater. The product should not be soaked or wringed. To finish, squeeze the extra water from the product and rinse the garment in clean water three to four times.

A wool product can be rolled into a terry cloth towel and squeezed so that the extra water soaks into the towel. The product should then be dried flat on top of a towel. When the product is nearly dry, the towel can be removed and the product can be left to dry airily on a flat surface.

    Care instructions explained

Marimekko has three product lines and several product categories: clothing, bags and accessories as well as home products. The range of raw materials we use is wide because our product selection is so large. In addition to cotton we use, among others, linen, wool, merino wool, lyocell, modal, viscose, silk and leather.

Marimekko’s products are made to withstand time and to stay beautiful. By following the product’s care instructions, you will enable your product to remain beautiful for as long as possible.

General care instructions and their explanations:

    Oeko-Tex

Most of Marimekko’s fabrics that are printed in Helsinki have the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate. The certificate ensures that the materials in question have been tested by an independent third party and that they don’t contain substances that could be harmful to people or to the environment (according to the standard’s criteria). In addition to the certified printed materials, Marimekko also has the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate for bedclothes and terry cloth products as well as for most of the clothing fabrics and knits.

    Clothing

We love the patterns and colors of our products. In order to keep your Marimekko product in good condition for as long as possible and to keep its bright colors and shape, our technical product designers have tested the materials and come up with the best care instructions for each product. Please follow the care instructions carefully so that you can enjoy your beautiful Marimekko product for as long as possible!

    COTTON

Cotton is a soft natural fiber that is breathable, absorbs liquids well and has a soft feel. Since cotton is a natural fiber, the changes in growing seasons affect the quality of different batches of cotton.

Cotton products are relatively easy to take care of. Dark and bold colored items may bleed color especially in the first washes, which is why they should be washed separately or with like colors in extra water. We recommend following the given washing temperature since washing in a lower temperature may cause color transfer. Cotton products should not be soaked. Bold colored and patterned products should be washed inside out in order to preserve the beautiful colors and patterns. A cotton product may shrink in the first wash. Clothes should be reshaped into their original size after washing. Cotton products smooth out better if they are ironed while still damp.

    LYOCELL

Lyocell is a modified cellulose fiber that has an environmentally friendly production process. The best features of lyocell are that it is absorbent, firm, it drapes nicely and it’s soft.

We recommend washing lyocell products inside out and separate from other laundry in extra water, so that the colors stay even. Bold colored products may bleed or transfer color when wet or dry, especially when they are new. Lyocell products should not be soaked. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product.

Carefully reshape the product while damp into its original size and hang to dry or dry on a flat surface if the care instructions recommend doing so. The material may feel stiff after washing, but it will soften once it dries and after it is ironed. The product should be ironed through a damp cloth.

    SILK

Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers that is also light, fine and supple. Silk is an absorbent material. Since it is a delicate natural material, silk does not tolerate chemicals and strong friction or pull on the seams. Sunlight may weaken the fiber and fade colors.

We recommend washing silk in a delicate wash with cool extra water and a detergent meant for silks. The product should also be turned inside out and washed separately from other laundry to keep the colors even. Avoid wringing and chafing. Bold colored products may bleed or transfer color when wet or dry. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product. Silk products should be ironed on the reverse side through a damp cloth.

    WOOL

Wool is known for its good thermal insulation and the fact that it is absorbent and flexible. Since wool is a natural fiber that is resistant to stains, it does not need to be washed very often but is easily cleaned and refreshed by airing. The ideal weather for airing is cold and damp. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product. Wool products should be stored in an airy space either folded up or on a sturdy hanger.

Pilling (the formation of short fuzz or fuzz balls) may occur on the surface of a wool product because of chafing, especially when it is new. Products made of soft natural fibers typically form slight pilling. The best way to get rid of fuzz balls is to comb the product with a wool comb or to remove the fuzz balls by hand. Wool is often mixed with other animal fibers or synthetic fibers, depending on the desired outcome.

    LINEN

Linen is a natural fiber that has a fine sheen, is absorbent and has a pleasant feel. Linen feels warm in the cold and cool in heat and it doesn’t cling with static. It is typical of linen to wrinkle easily and to have an uneven surface with small knots and thicker strings here and there. The fiber knots may not always come loose during the fabric’s preliminary treatments but will detach only later after the printing process, thus leaving a white dot on the fabric.

Linen products remain beautiful and are long-lasting as long as they are cared for according to the care instructions. Dark fabrics may bleed color especially in the first washes. Linen textiles should be turned inside out and washed separately in extra water. Linen products can be spin-dried lightly but should not be tumble dried.

Reshape the product to its original size after washing. Linen products smooth out better if they are ironed while still damp.

    DOWN PRODUCTS

Down is a natural material, which keeps its good qualities for a long time if it is taken care of properly. Down is a light, airy and durable insulator.

Down products should be washed inside out with a delicate program in extra water. Use a mild detergent that is free of whiteners and use only 1/3 of the regular amount. We do not recommend the use of softeners. Down products should be tumble dried for 3 to 4 hours in a low temperature with the help of tennis balls or similar, which help to fluff the down and allow it to disperse more evenly in the product. Check the label for exact washing instructions and temperatures for each product.

The down used for insulation in Marimekko products is produced as a by-product of the food industry. Our products do not contain down that is plucked from live birds.

    VISCOSE

Viscose is a modified cellulose fiber, which is soft and absorbent and has a pleasant faint sheen. Viscose doesn’t cling with static. Viscose has a low abrasion resistance, which means the soft surface may form pilling.

By washing the product inside out, the surface will be saved from chafing. We recommend washing viscose products either by hand or with the delicate care program in the washer. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product. Clothes made from viscose should be washed in extra water to avoid laundry wrinkles. We don’t recommend soaking or using softeners for viscose since they may weaken the fabric. Carefully reshape the product while damp into its original size and hang to dry or dry on a flat surface if the care instructions recommend doing so.

The material may feel stiff after washing, but it will soften once it dries and after it is ironed. Viscose products should be ironed through a damp cloth. Ironing will also help in restoring the product to its original size and shape.

    Bags & Accessories

    CANVAS MATERIALS

The canvas used in our products is 100 % cotton. Canvas is, however, susceptible to fading in sunlight and under wear. Washing may also fade the material somewhat. Dark and bold colored items may bleed color especially in the first washes, which is why they should be washed separately or with like colors in extra water. A light spin will help with preventing the appearance of laundry wrinkles. If a product is washed by hand, soaking should be avoided. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product.

Because our canvas materials have a stain repellent finish, softeners should not be used while washing. Ironing the canvas after a wash will reactivate the stain repellent finish. The repellent wears out slowly as the product is used but can be reapplied using a protective textile spray. Before treating the whole product with a new textile spray, make sure to test it first somewhere unnoticeable.

    LEATHER MATERIALS

Leather is a breathable and flexible natural material, which is long-lasting and ages beautifully if it is taken care of correctly. Use products specially made for leather to take care of and protect your leather items. When using a new leather protector for the first time, always test it first somewhere unnoticeable. Wipe away dust and dirt with a soft brush or a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, use a special leather cleanser. Suede leather can be brushed clean of dirt and dust with a special suede eraser or brush.

Leather doesn’t like to get wet. To dry a wet leather product, first use an absorbent material to pat it dry and then leave it to dry in room temperature. Leather should never be dried in a hot place, such as in a sauna or on a heater. If left in sunlight, leather may fade and dry out.

Dyed leather may let off color when chafed or wet. The small roughness on the surface and unevenness in color are typical characteristics of leather and only underline its naturalness.

    INFORMATION ON VACHETTA

Vachetta is a vegetable-tanned leather that is otherwise untreated and which turns a beautiful dark color with age and the effect of sunlight.

The darkening color that comes with age (patina) protects the leather somewhat, but since it is untreated, it is sensitive to moisture, dirt and scrapes. If the leather gets wet, pat it dry with a clean light-colored cloth. Leather soaps, cleansers and conditioners may speed up the change in color. Avoid contact with strong chemicals such as hand sanitizer, or with make up or perfume. We recommend storing a vachetta bag in a cotton pouch.

    NUBUCK

Nubuck leather is a soft and strong natural material with a fine surface, which is long-lasting and ages beautifully if it is taken care of correctly. Nubuck is sensitive to moisture and dirt, which is why it should be treated with a leather protector. When using a new leather protector for the first time, always test it first somewhere unnoticeable. Nubuck leather can be brushed clean of dirt and dust with a special nubuck eraser or brush.

    OVEN MITTENS

Marimekko´s oven mitten is designed to protect its user from hot dishes. Avoid using the product when it is damp as this weakens its thermal insulation capacity. Avoid contact with oven heating elements and open flame. The maximum touch temperature for the product is 250 degrees Celsius.

    WOODEN PRODUCTS

The wooden details on our products need constant care in order to stay beautiful and in good condition for as long as possible. As wood dries, it begins to crack, which is why we recommend treating the product with light-colored olive oil whenever it starts to feel dry or when it has started to loose its sheen. Let the oil absorb into the wood overnight and repeat the treatment the next day if the wood looks like it could absorb some more. Wooden products don’t stand soaking. They should be washed quickly by hand and dried thoroughly.

    OIVA DISHES

Marimekko’s Oiva dishes are made from vitro porcelain, which is a high-fired and high-class material. Thanks to the high firing temperature, the surface of vitro porcelain is impenetrable to liquids and foodstuff. The dishes are dishwasher, oven, microwave oven and freezer proof. Naturally products which contain wooden or leather details are not suitable for ovens or dishwashers and should be washed by hand. Oiva dishes are not suitable for cooking food with on the kitchen stove. The warm-colored white vitro porcelain works as a perfect background for Marimekko’s colorful prints.

    SUKAT MAKKARALLA GLASSES

The Sukat Makkaralla (Socks Rolled down) products are made from body-colored mouth blown glass. The glass is colored with dyes that will not dissolve into food, making them perfectly safe to use. The glass is mouth blown into a mold, which means the products are handmade and may contain occasional air bubbles. Marimekko’s glass products are made for cool drinks – they do not stand boiling liquids. The glasses are dishwasher proof but we do recommend washing the pitcher by hand due to its shape and size. The glasses should not be used as candleholders.

    GLASS VASES

Like the Sukat Makkaralla products, our glass vases are also made of body-colored mouth blown glass. Handmade glass products may contain occasional air bubbles or small streaks on the surface. Glass vases should be washed by hand.

    TRAYS

Marimekko’s trays are made from melamine-coated birch veneer. We recommend wiping them clean with a damp cloth or washing by hand. Do not soak.

    CUTTING BOARDS

Marimekko’s cutting boards are made from melamine-coated high-density fiberboard (HDF). Cutting boards may also be used as pot coasters since they can withstand temperatures of up to 170 degrees Celsius. We recommend washing cutting boards by hand.

    PLACEMATS

Our placemats are made from printed cotton, which is then coated with phthalate-free PVC. The surface of the placemats is porous and it can absorb stains. The products should be wiped clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent can be used when necessary. We recommend removing food and other stains right away. PVC coated placemats should not be soaked or cleaned under running water. The placemats do not withstand machine washing. If the product gets wet, water may seep in between the fabric and the coating, which may cause the colors to bleed. The placemats are meant for indoor use only.

We also have acrylic-coated placemats that can withstand machine washing. Check the label for exact care instructions for each product. Just like the PVC coated placemats, these too can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. We recommend removing food and other stains right away.

    BEDLINEN

Most of our bedlinen are made from cotton but we do also have bedding made of linen and satin from time to time. All of the materials will remain beautiful for longer if they are taken care of according to the care instructions. Please wash the products in the given washing temperature. Bedlinen should not be soaked and they should be removed promptly from the washing machine after the washing cycle has completed. We recommend using detergents meant for colored laundry that don’t contain whiteners or brighteners. Bedlinen should be washed in extra water before using them for the first time in order to wash away any extra dye that may come off.

    TERRY CLOTH

Most of Marimekko’s terry cloth products have been manufactured by weaving. The surface of woven terry cloth is made up of loops. It is typical of woven terry cloth to form runs or elongated terry cloth loops when a loop gets caught on something sharp or rough, causing the threads to move in the fabric. If this happens, the long loops can be cut short without the fabric coming undone. Terry cloth towels and bathrobes should be washed before using them for the first time.

Terry cloth products will stay in good condition for a long time if they are taken care of according to the care instructions. Terry cloth products should be washed in a full washing machine with similar colors and in the correct washing temperature. We recommend using detergents meant for colored laundry that don’t contain whiteners or optical brighteners. Some cosmetic products may also contain ingredients that could harm colors.

    Fabrics

Marimekko’s fabrics are printed either by using the flatbed or rotary printing methods. When printing fabrics with large patterns using the flatbed printing method, a so called ‘report line’ is left on the ends of the design, which will show in various ways depending on the colors and patterns of the fabric. The report line gives the fabric a unique look. It is not a flaw but an aspect of the printing method and it can also be used as an effect. The fabric reports can deviate from the stated +/- 3 % and the changes in size are dependent on the quality of the fabric.

We recommend a washing temperature of 60 degrees Celsius for almost all of our printed fabrics. For our coated fabrics and pigment-printed fabrics we recommend using the delicate program and a washing temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. For an ideal washing outcome, we recommend washing about five meters of fabric in a washing machine with a capacity of 6–7 kilos.

    COTTON

Our collections include cotton and heavyweight cotton, both of which have a plain weave. Both fabrics are ideal for home décor such as curtains, tablecloths and cushion covers and they are also suitable for sewing clothes.

    COATED FABRICS

Our coated cotton fabrics have either a phthalate-free PVC or acrylic coating. Coated cotton fabrics can be washed in extra water and ironed from the reverse side.

    SATIN

Cotton satin has a beautiful smooth and shiny surface. The sheen is achieved by using a special weave where the cotton thread mostly runs along the surface of the fabric. The sheen is best preserved by ironing the fabric after washing.

    LINEN

Linen is a breathable and strong material, which is an ideal material for home décor as well as for clothing. The fabric wrinkles easily, which is good to have in mind when thinking of the product’s purpose.

    BATISTE

Batiste fabric, with its fine cotton thread and plain weave, is ideal for curtains since it is lightweight and transparent.
