Marimekko bags and cosmetic bags are printed in Helsinki

11 July 2016

Nearby the Herttoniemi metro station in Eastern Helsinki, Finland, printing machines are buzzing and about a million meters of fabric is annually crowned with Marimekko's bold prints. In fact all Marimekko's fabrics sold by the meter get their prints at the company's own fabric printing factory in Helsinki. Also the fabrics used in the printed bags included in Marimekko's fall/winter 2016 collection are printed at the company's own printing factory. In addition, also the prints in cosmetic bags and coins purses are created in the same place.

"Our own fabric printing factory in Helsinki is the heart and soul of Marimekko's print design. The fact that designing and printing is done under the same roof has a remarkable significance from the perspective of smooth operations and being a pioneer in print design. We are proud of our print design expertise and that we are able to continue the print design tradition in Finland", says Minna Kemell Kutvonen, Marimekko's Design and Product Development Director of Home Products and Prints.

From the current fall/winter collection, for example, the bags included in the Pieni Unikko and Hamppu series have been printed in Helsinki. These bags are sewed in Estonia and their straps are made of European cow leather. Did you know that the leather used in Marimekko products is a by-product from the food industry?
