Marimekko's Sustainability Review 2019 is now published

Marimekko's Sustainability Review 2019, which details our progress in all our sustainability targets is now available. The review presents our progress in implementing our sustainability commitments and covers, among other things, our use of sustainable materials, sustainability in our supply chain, and the environmental impacts of our in-house operations. You can find the full sustainability review here.

Major steps towards more sustainable materials

During 2019, we have taken steps in increasing the share of more sustainable materials in our products and packaging: our sourcing of Better Cotton reached an all-time high and represented 88 percent of all the cotton used in Marimekko. Furthermore, our cooperations aiming at developing more sustainable materials with the Finnish fiber technology company Spinnova and with the Ioncell™ project led by Aalto University and the University of Helsinki took significant leaps forward. In addition, we continued our work to extend product life, to minimize our environmental impacts as well as our efforts to improve the sustainability of our supply chain, among other things.

Mapping our carbon footprint in more detail

In our work to minimize the environmental impacts of our operations, we have started to map our carbon footprint in more detail. Through energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources, we have already reduced the emissions of our own printing factory and headquarters by almost 80 percent since 2010. But as a significant part of the environmental impacts occurs outside the walls of our offices, we have started to collect data that will help us put in place future action plans to reduce emissions, which will extend to our supply chain as well.
