At the turn of the 1960s, Maija Isola became inspired by folk art and designed the decorative Ornamentti (ornament) series of lacy prints reminiscent of traditional embroidery motifs. Sarafan (a sleeveless dress and part of a Russian folk costume) was one of the designs in that series.
