The prints designed by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi in the early years of Marimekko were revolutionary in their day. Massive, wide stripes and color surfaces had only been seen in, for example, Mark Rothko’s paintings, whereas printed fabrics usually had floral or ornamental themes.
