Fairness to everyone and everything

For Marimekko, sustainability means respecting people and the environment in everything we do. Our value "fairness to everyone and everything" summarizes our sustainability thinking. We treat people fairly, and we create products that bring joy for a long time with minimal impact on the environment.

Timeless design

We aim to offer our customers long-lasting products that they will want to keep.

Timelessness has been the cornerstone of our design ethos since the very beginning of the company. Marimekko’s collections are well thought-out and utilize functional designs and patterns, often inspired by our archives, that never go out of style. It is our goal that, if properly cared for, Marimekko products may be handed down from one generation to another.

WE CREATE PRODUCTS THAT BRING JOY FOR MANY YEARS.

The factories

Marimekko products are manufactured by a skilled supplier network around the world – almost 70% in Europe and the rest in Asia.

We choose our suppliers carefully, and it is important to us that they do business in an ethical and responsible manner. We have long-standing relationships with many of our suppliers, and we monitor working conditions at the factories regularly through visits by Marimekko personnel and with the help of external auditors. Marimekko is a member of the amfori BSCI initiative, which aims to improve working conditions in global supply chains.

Product care

Our goal at Marimekko is to make products that, with the proper care, may be handed down from generation to generation. Lengthening a product’s lifecycle is an effective way to reduce its environmental footprint.

Our products are marked with the Clevercare label, which supports the proper care of products. On the Clevercare.info website, you can find care instructions that are environmentally friendly and effective for your product. For example, a product should not be washed too often or in temperatures that are too high. This is not only beneficial to the environment, but also allows the product to stay beautiful longer.

Sustainable cotton

We continuously work to increase the ratio of sustainable cotton in our products. In 2018, Better Cotton accounted for 64% of the total cotton used.

Cotton is the world’s most widely used natural fiber and currently is the material most used in Marimekko products. In 2013, Marimekko became the first Finnish company to join the international Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in 2013. The goal of the BCI is to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future.

In 2018, Marimekko sourced about 748 (425 in 2017) metric tons of Better Cotton, up from 425 metric tons in 2017. This accounted for 64% of the cotton sourced by Marimekko during the year, versus 53% in 2017. Better Cotton is not physically traceable to end products. However, BCI farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton in equivalent volumes to those we source.

Marimekko was the first Finnish company to join the international Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in 2013.

Other materials

We have drafted product policies that define our sustainability requirements for different materials, including merino wool, down and leather.

Our designers are constantly looking for new materials that appeal to today’s consumer and are more sustainable. In addition to cotton, materials used in the collections include linen, wool, merino wool, lyocell, modal, viscose, silk and leather.

Care for the environment

Our goal is to reduce our environmental impact consistently and to improve our resource efficiency.

Nature is an important source of inspiration for Marimekko, and we want to treat our natural resources with respect. We have set five environmental targets for our company printing mill and head office, including:

· continual reduction in energy consumption
· use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as wind and hydropower
· reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 50%
· reduction of waste resulting from operations by 20%
· reduction of water consumption relative to output by 20%
