    Piccolo

    Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, 1953

In 1953, the very year she joined Marimekko, Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi created Piccolo, a striped fabric pattern painted with vivid brushstrokes. Three years later, the Jokapoika shirt made from the fabric appeared in stores and the streets – for good, it seems.

The Jokapoika button-up shirt has a relaxed, straight fit and it features the Piccolo pattern, which is printed in Helsinki. The shirt has a pointed collar, a metal button closure, and a chest pocket. The cuffed sleeves have slits and metal button closures. There are small side slits at the hem.

The Jokapoika shirt is made of a new, heavier cotton fabric, which contains 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled cotton.

In 2026, we celebrate 70 years of Jokapoika—the shirt of choice for architects, artists, designers and all creatives. Its iconic architectural silhouette, designed by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, features the striped Piccolo print she also created.
Since 1956, this Marimekko classic has been in continuous production, redefining the standard shirt with its utilitarian design. Decade after decade, people have discovered new ways to wear and style Jokapoika, proof of  the shirt’s timeless versatility.
