The 5 cornerstones of Fanni Lyytikäinen's interior design philosophy

The visual artist, vintage-lover, and creative muse for our new pre-loved collection shares her method for beautiful interior madness: treat objects like art.

Fanni Lyytikäinen is a creative working fluently across art, fashion, illustration, and styling. As a visual artist for various clients, she experiences the fizz of an artistic breakthrough when she cracks the essence of a brand’s story, from where she immerses herself in the work holistically.

Marimekko's history steeped in its rich library of powerful prints spoke to Fanni, who is the stylist and creative mind behind the new Marimekko Pre-loved campaign. The second-hand platform has been freshly updated with timeless products for the home, including everything from colorful tableware to decorative objects and fabrics.

"It's clear that Marimekko's origin story came from the heart of its founder."

For Fanni, Marimekko's patterns represent wearable and usable art. “It's clear that Marimekko's origin story came from the heart of its founder. She [Armi Ratia] had the vision to create bold prints and bring people together who share the same philosophy. Marimekko stems from genuine love, and authenticity clearly goes a long way,” says Fanni. She believes the most inspiring spaces are built from carefully placed objects from different eras that have a story to tell.

1. Think of design objects like art

When making your interior design choices, it’s important to forget trends and choose pieces that speak to you on a deeper level. Design objects should be seen as art, which increases their symbolism and value. “We’d never throw away a sculpture because it’s no longer fashionable, would we?” poses Fanni. Consider if your choice will stand the test of time and make you feel something when you look at or use it.

2. Give objects space

Remember that you don't have to keep everything on display at once. You can archive things and use them again when you feel like it, depending on the mood. The form and beauty of selected objects are emphasized when fewer of them are on show.

3. Appreciate depth
Look beyond the surface. Objects often have a deeper meaning than their original purpose. A vase, for example, can be an art piece—even without flowers. “It doesn't have to be just a vase. In the pre-loved images we shot for the campaign, the vase is like a beautiful white egg on its own,” says Fanni.

4. Remember the value of stories

The value of second-hand pieces is determined by their age. Items that you bought new might turn into collector's items or art over time. It’s the history of objects that gives them a soul worth preserving and appreciating.

5. Madness is beautiful

Even crazy ideas work in interior design when combined in the right way. In fashion, a white t-shirt paired with an extravagant bottom enlivens the whole outfit. When decorating, you can create a similar look with timeless, elegant furniture. It lays a great foundation.

“Timeless doesn’t always mean white and minimalist. Look for inspiration in the history of architecture and interior design, and pay attention to which solutions have lived through the decades. One of the most influential Finnish designers of the 20th century, Yrjö Kukkapuro's, chairs are a good example of this thinking. They’re completely crazy, yet simultaneously timeless,” says Fanni.
