Artek + Marimekko. The art of printmaking meets the technology of wood bending.

Celebrating Artek’s 90th anniversary, Bench 153B Seireeni combines Alvar Aalto’s 1945 bench design with Maija Isola’s Seireeni pattern from 1964, applied using marquetry on the birch veneer seat. Contrasting wood grains create a shimmering surface, where light and pattern interact.

Part of the limited-edition Artek + Marimekko collection, this bench is made from Finnish birch at Artek’s Turku factory in south-western Finland.

The direction of the surface veneer varies due to the production process, which means the pattern may appear either as a positive or a negative. This is an essential characteristic of the product and its craftsmanship.

Seireeni

Maija Isola, 1964

While traveling in Greece in the early 1960s, Maija Isola got inspired by the movement of water and depicted it in several fabric prints, including Seireeni (siren) from 1964. Named after the mythological sirens, the pattern also recalls the enchanting singing that lured sailors into dangerous waters.
