Sustainability / Planet, climate and nature
We work towards mitigating climate change, safeguarding biodiversity and use resources more efficiently in our own operations and across our value chains.
In product development, Marimekko teams consider the quality and environmental impacts of materials – including climate, biodiversity and water use – as well as product care and recyclability.
Together with other actors, we want to promote the development of new technologies, materials and business models in the industry. In addition, developing circular-economy-based operating models together with our partners can support more efficient use of materials and resources.

Climate impacts are a significant theme in our sustainability work, and we have been striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a goal-oriented manner for years. To guide us in this work, we have calculated Marimekko's carbon footprint.
You can reduce the environmental impact of your Marimekko products by following the tips and tricks below.
Opt for delivery to a convenient pickup point instead of home delivery. This can help reduce the need for separate home deliveries.
Each year, millions of online clothing orders are returned due to incorrect sizes. Avoid return hassles by ensuring you order the correct size and only what you intend to keep. Utilize our size guide for assistance.
Avoid washing your clothes too often. Airing your garments is a great way to refresh them. Even minor stains are usually easy to remove by hand.
By hang drying your laundry, you will not only save energy; your clothes will keep their shape better and even last longer too.
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, doubling the wear of garments can reduce the fashion industry’s emissions by up to 44%. Opt for quality over quantity.
23% Product use
The primary source of Marimekko’s carbon emissions lies in the user phase of our products – how our customers care for and use them over time. This is why we share information on product care, which can help reduce electricity use in care and support longer use of garments.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the sourcing of textiles for our products significantly contributes to our carbon footprint. Our goal is to transition our material portfolio towards, for example organic and recycled materials, while also taking into account other impacts in value chains. While many assume that transportation is the primary source of C0₂ in the global fashion industry, for Marimekko, it represents only 14% of our emissions. Nonetheless, we're actively working to reduce this impact by optimizing logistics routes and selecting transportation modes with lower emissions.Marimekko's own operations, including energy usage at our headquarters, contribute to just 0.4% of our total C0₂ emissions. This underscores the importance we place on material choices and timeless design. The remaining third of our carbon footprint is attributed to services we utilize, such as IT, and other purchased materials. Manufacturing of textile products 6%, Purchased ceramics and glass products and their manufacturing 6%, Other purchased products and services 16%, Others such as business travel and waste 4%.

There are many other ways to reduce your emissions at home. All it takes is a few adjustments to your usual product care routines. Learn more in our comprehensive care guide.
